Upgrading coffee facilities at one of Scotland’s best-known landmarks

Eilean Donan Castle is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland and remains one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

As part of its ongoing effort to enhance the visitor experience, the castle management decided to upgrade its coffee facilities with equipment that could serve a broad range of drinks efficiently while still feeling appropriate for such a distinctive heritage setting.

The objective was clear: install high-quality coffee machines capable of delivering both performance and flexibility, while complementing the castle’s atmosphere and supporting the realities of a busy visitor operation.

Traditional espresso performance, backed by flexible bean-to-cup service

After assessing the castle’s requirements, we recommended a combination of a 3-group traditional espresso machine and a Jura Giga X8 Gen 2 bean-to-cup machine.

The traditional 3-group machine was selected for its ability to produce high-quality coffee in larger volumes, making it well suited to a busy visitor attraction. It offered the performance needed for consistent espresso-based drinks, while also bringing a polished, professional look that sat comfortably within the castle environment.

Alongside this, the Jura Giga X8 Gen 2 added another layer of flexibility. It allowed the team to offer a wide variety of drinks, including cappuccinos, lattes and espressos, at the touch of a screen. For visitors, that meant more choice. For staff, it meant efficient service during busy periods and an easy-to-use machine that could support smooth day-to-day operation.

In addition to the equipment, the castle also chose to serve our coffee, made from high-quality beans sourced from ethical and sustainable origins and roasted in small batches for freshness and flavour.

Coffee machine installation at Eilean Donan Castle
For a visitor attraction like Eilean Donan Castle, coffee service needs to be both efficient and in keeping with the setting — high-performing equipment, easy operation, and a guest experience that feels considered from start to finish.

A successful installation that led to further investment

The installation proved to be a strong success. Visitors appreciated the wider range of coffee options available, while the castle team found the machines reliable, efficient and straightforward to use and maintain.

Just as importantly, the upgraded coffee offer contributed positively to the overall visitor experience and created an additional source of revenue, with guests frequently purchasing coffee and refreshments as part of their visit.

Such was the success of the original installation that the business chose to invest further, adding another Jura Giga bean-to-cup machine for the newly opened Foodhall. For the 2023 season, they also invested in an additional 3-group traditional espresso machine for the highly recommended and busy Heilan Scran Takeaway.
