Over 20 million people make a living in the coffee trade from the many thousands of smallholders to traders, brokers, shippers, roasters and dealers. An astonishing product of nature, coffee grows in the tropics on two species of coffee tree –Coffea Arabica and Coffea Robusta (there are others as well).
Coffee trees are generally kept below two metres in height to ease harvesting. Better quality coffee grows high up, often on mountain sides in countries like Costa Rica, Kenya and El Salvador – this is really the secret of why ‘There’s an Awful Lot of Coffee in Brazil’ as they are fortunate to have an inland plateau – effectively a raised area near the equator so vast amounts of coffee can be grown.
